Alain Rüfenacht was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and completed his Ph.D. degree on high temperature superconductors at the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland in collaboration with the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. In 1986 the first of the ceramic high temperature superconductors were discovered at this IBM laboratory by Bednorz and Müller who earned the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. Alain’s involvement with the cutting edge of superconducting technology continued at the Swiss National Measurement Institute METAS in Bern and then with the National Institute of Standards and Metrology in Boulder, Colorado where the application of superconductors to metrology has been pioneered. The group that Alain works in developed the superconducting devices that are the basis for New Zealand’s Josephson voltage standard. Alain is in New Zealand to assist MSL with developing a Josephson programmable voltage standard for making state of the art ac voltage measurements.
The New SI: Impact of Quantum Voltage Standards in the Proposed Redefinition of the SI Units
In 2018, the International System of Units (SI) will be revised so that the kilogram, the kelvin, the ampere, and the mole will be redefined in terms of fundamental physical constants. Many of the implementations of the new definitions will depend on new types of measuring instruments using superconducting technologies developed over the last couple of decades. In this talk, physicist Dr Alain Rufenacht will describe the work of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA) in leading the development of these technologies and their application to new high-accuracy techniques for measuring voltage, mass, and temperature.
Dr Mary Quin is the inaugural Chief Executive of Callaghan Innovation. She returned to New Zealand to take up the role in May 2013, after more than 30 years working overseas in senior executive roles in NASDAQ-listed companies such as Eastman Kodak Company and Xerox, where she was VP of Strategy and Business Development for Xerox’ US$5.5 billion Production Systems Group.
Her most recent role was as President of the 2,800-person US support services company, NANA Management Services LLC in Alaska. Dr Quin graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) with First Class Honours in Physics. She completed a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University in Illinois and after working in research and development for engineering company Raychem for several years, attended Harvard Business School, where she graduated as a Baker Scholar.
As Director Group Regulatory, Jo leads regulatory affairs for Fonterra to ensure full compliance with food regulations, and advocacy so as to optimise market access for our current product range and new innovations. Until recently, Jo led the Product Assurance team, developing and implementing Fonterra’s global food safety and quality strategy, standards framework, food safety risk management and providing a quality advisory function to support Fonterra’s business units.
Jo has 23 years of technical, quality and general management experience in the New Zealand dairy industry, having entered the industry on the Graduate Programme.
Additionally, Jo is Vice President of SSAFE, a global organisation of leading consumer food companies working to enhance food safety.

Tim was chairman of the Spicer & Oppenheim National Partnership, for a three year term and he has been a member of BDO’s National Management Board.

Alan Brady is a pioneer grower and producer of Central Otago wines but claims he is a winemaker by accident. With a background in journalism Alan left Northern Ireland in 1959 to take on a role with the Manawatu Evening Standard before moving south as a reporter with the Otago Daily Times. In 1969 Alan joined the NZBC in Dunedin working on Radio and TV broadcasting. He purchased 16 acres of land at Gibbston in 1976 wanting to do something different and planted an ‘experimental’ vineyard in 1981. At 45 degrees south of the equator everyone thought it was too cold, too high and too far south for grapes, but Alan had a hunch and released Central Otago’s first commercial vintage in 1987. The wine quickly gained considerable recognition, creating Central Otago’s first footprints in the world of winemaking. Alan was a founding member and past president of the Central Otago Winegrowers Assn and served on the executive of the New Zealand Winegrowers Institute. After his retirement as General Manager of Gibbston Valley Winery which he’d developed into a large operation including a restaurant, wine cave, outdoor concert venue attracting thousands of visitors every year, he built a second winery Mount Edward, also in Gibbston in 1998 as a small Pinot Noir specialist producer, before “retiring” in 2004. He continues to make wine every year under the “Wild Irishman” label and is a director of Felton Road Wines Ltd. In 2012 he published his autobiography “Pinot Central – A Windmaker’s Story” (Penguin)”.

Alan will talk alongside Kirsten Creasy (Hill Labs) about the development of winemaking in the Otago region and how regulations in the industry have provided NZ producers the scope to produce top quality wines that are internationally recognised. An interactive talk (that will include some wine) demonstrating the value of growers, regulators and labs working together.
Newly appointed CEO, Dieter Adam has worked with a large number of New Zealand’s leading food and beverage exporters, as well as manufacturers in the agritech sector, helping them grow their export businesses.
With a Ph.D in plant biotechnology and having held research positions in Germany and Denmark, Dieter arrived in New Zealand from Germany in 1986 to take up an academic position at the University of Waikato. He joined the commercial world in 1994 and has held senior management positions in the primary industry (Rayonier New Zealand, Livestock Improvement Corporation), as well as his own consultancy business and more recently as Director – Food & Beverage/Biotechnology at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
Dieter’s experience covers senior executive and governance roles in the manufacturing and service sectors combined with business-to-business and business-to-consumer relationships, both internationally and in New Zealand.
Richard Suckling, Fleet Services Technical Manager, joined Fonterra in 2001 and is responsible for all technology on the Fonterra Milk Collection Fleet as well as technology across the Fonterra light fleet business units in New Zealand and Australia.
A strong focus on reliable technology solutions which are safe, efficient and accurate Richard has worked in partnership with NZ Trading Standards to achieve some of these outcomes.

Neville Owen (National Measurement Institute Australia)
This workshop, spread over two one-hour sessions, will provide attendees with a good overview of recent developments in pressure measurement and calibration. Time is also allocated for an extended discussion of revision of the MSA test methods.
Peter Saunders (Measurement Standards Lab)
This 40 minute workshop will provide users of low-temperature infra-red radiation thermometers (IRTs) with all the advice they need to use them properly. The discussion will cover the different errors that occur in use, how to carry-out measurements that avoid these errors, and how to check the thermometer at the ice point.
David Southworth (Isotech)
This short 40 minute workshop will provide attendees with advice on the best-practice use of dry block calibrators. These are widely used to calibrate temperature sensors and can cover the range from -100 °C to 1300 °C. Manufacturers promise ease of operation and they can be used successfully but there are pitfalls. If care is not taken results can be poor.
Blair Hall, Rod White (Measurement Standards Lab)
This one-hour workshop will provide newcomers to the test and calibration business with an introduction to measurement uncertainty. It will cover why we need measurement uncertainty, how to calculate uncertainty, how to find sources of uncertainty, and how to use uncertainty in your measurement processes.
Jo Finer (Fonterra), Tim Ward (BDO), Greg Allnutt (Results Group)
